About Mangaldai Municipal Board

Mangaldai Municipal Board was constituted in the year 1957 under the Chairmanship of the Dr. Ratneswar Saharia with 10 nos of wards.
Presently the Board is formed with 10(Ten) Nos. of wards. The office of the Chairman of the Board is situated in the Ward No.1 by the side of the National High Way-52 (Presently No.15).
The office of the Municipal Board is covered with an area of 01 Bighas 4 Katha 10 Lassa of Mangaldai Town which is the District Head Quarter of Darrang of Darrang District created in the year 1983. The river Mangaldai and its tributary Bega River are flowing through the Mangaldai Municipal area. The boundary of Mangaldai Municipal Board is as follows.

About Mangaldai Town

Mangaldai is the largest city of Darrang district. It was named after Mangaldahi, who was the daughter of the Rajah of Darrang and was married to Pratap Singha, a ruler of the Ahom kingdom. Mangaldoi serves as the district's headquarters, and is an important trading centre for agricultural products. The Mangaldai is located at 26.43’ N 92.03’E. It is about 68 km by road from Guwahati. The Town is beautiful located on the Brahmaputra valley. Mangaldai is a head quarter of Darrang District. It has one National Park known as Orang National Park distance from Mangaldai to Orang National Park is 34 kilometres it situated at East side of Mangaldai. 
The current population of the town is 25835 persons out of which 51.0% are male and 49.0% are female. The town has a decadal growth of 8.01% during the period of 2001-2011 Census.
The total literacy rate of the town is 92.57%. The male literacy rate of the town is 94.95% against a female literacy rate of 90.09%.

History of Darrang District

The name Darrang was derived from the Bodo ward Darrang which mean ‘Lilabhumi’ (Playground) of gods. According to scholar Late Dineswar Sarma the ward Darrang come from Dawrang which means gate , as there was direct entry to Bhutan and from there to Nepal, China etc. Gradually this was known Darrang. Darrang district occupies an area of 3,481 square kilometres.  According to the 2011 census Darrang district has a population of 908,090. This gives it a ranking of 463rd in India (out of a total of 640). The district has a population density of 491 inhabitants per square kilometre (1,270 /sq mi) . Its population growth rate over the decade 2001-2011 was 19.51%. Darrang has a sex ratio of 923 females for every 1000 males and a literacy rate of 64.55%. 868,532 (57.74%) are Hindus, 534,658 (35.54%) are Muslims, and 97,306 (1.75%) are Christians.
